James Francis Gill

Galerie Montmartre is pleased to present James Francis Gill in its collections. The 1934 Texas born artist has made a name for himself as early as the 60s, being one of the pioneers of the American Pop Art.

In 1962 his Marilyn Triptych was exhibited somehow facing Warhol’s diptych in both Alan galleries in New York. Proof of its immediate success, the triptych was bought and donated to the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA).

Marilyn Triptuch (1962), MoMA collection, New York

Photographic expressionism as much as his use of graphite pencil in Pop Art made him quite distinct among this very first wave.
Yet, although recognized and praised, he decided to step away from the public art scene in 1972. He continued teaching at several universities, then began painting again.

Gill was rediscovered in the 90s with an interview given to the Smithsonian art magazine, at the same time exploring the infinite possibilities of computer design, adding a new dimension, well-fitted to Pop art, to his alredy massive work.
